1pm: A talk by Special Guest Margaret Whitlam about things Wagnerian in her lifeThis was then followed by a screening of one of Mrs Whitlam’s favourite “chunks”, the love duet from Act 2 of Tristan and Isolde.

– Recital by the four Sydney Conservatorium opera students who we have sponsored in German language courses at the Goethe Institut this year – Erin O’Connor, Emily Garth, Rebecca Hilder and Jessica Pratt, accompanied by Sharolyn Kimmorley [Bayreuth Scholar for 2003].

– The Master’s Birthday Party – a catered birthday celebration, taking the place of the annual luncheon

1pm: Preparation for the Ring – Part 1 – Jim Leigh – spoke about different recordings of the Ring and introduced the film made in November 1964 of the recording of the Solti Götterdämmerung in the Sofiensaal, Vienna

1pm: Preparation for the Ring – Part 2 – Roger Cruickshank, Dr Dennis Mather, Dr Terence Watson – aspects of the Ring, including the music (by Dennis Mather) and further approaches to and insights into the Ring cycle

After some false starts and frustrating delays, we published Dr Antony’s rewritten Ring lectures entitled The Once and Future King – thoughts on the origins and performance of the ‘Ring’. The first copies were available a little over a week before the Neidhardt Ring opened
