Die Feen (the Fairies)

Member Barbara Brady will show and discuss a DVD of the Leipzig performance of this rarity

The German libretto was written by Wagner after Carlo Gozzi's La donna serpente. Die Feen was Wagner's first completed opera, but remained unperformed in his lifetime.

The talk will be followed by Wagner’s birthday champagne celebrations

2.00 pm Russian Wagnerians in the 20th and 21st Centuries

Rosamund Bartlett

Rosamund Bartlett is a writer, scholar, translator and lecturer. She has a doctorate from Oxford on Wagner and Russia. Her most recent books are Tolstoy: A Russian Life and a new translation of Anna Karenina. She has also written a biography of Chekhov and currently works with the Anton Chekhov Foundation, overseeing translations of his early short stories and letters. She has lectured on Russian literature, music and cultural history. For the Wagner Society she is presenting on Russian Wagnerians and will be playing a number of rare recordings of great singers of Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union.
